Can you share a bit about your journey leading up to BUas?

Mark: ‘My interest in media started way back in high school. I remember deciding to create a documentary as part of a project, and I had no idea at the time, but that was the beginning of my journey as a producer. I studied English and Drama. I didn’t have any formal training then, there were no cameras or media experts, but I was already learning the ropes of production. It was clear my passion lay in media.’

‘Over the course of 25 years, I worked across various areas, but my specialisation became television. One of my career highlights was being the Executive Producer for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. I was involved in creating broadcast packages and working with the Olympic committees to share the personal stories of athletes from across the world.’

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

Mark: ‘When I was working as the Vice President of MTV Canada, I was always hiring young people with very little experience and guiding them to find their path. That process, moulding and mentoring young talent, was incredibly rewarding. It’s the same at BUas. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing students reach their potential. I truly believe every student has something special to offer. Helping them discover and grow into that is one of the most valuable things you can give as a lecturer.’

Who has been your biggest influence or mentor in your career?

Mark: ‘I’ve been influenced by so many people throughout my career, but I’d have to say my parents had the biggest impact. My father is a management guru, and my mother is an accountant. They’ve always been positive role models for me. Even though they live far away, technology allows them to still be a part of my world. I always keep them updated, even during graduation events, I video-call them so they can feel like they’re here with me and my students.’

What aspects of working at BUas do you find most fulfilling?

Mark: ‘One thing that makes BUas so special is the international environment. Students and staff members from all over the world bring such unique perspectives, and it creates an exciting atmosphere. It feels like one big family here, and my colleagues are just as dedicated to education as I am. I also love seeing students grow and truly shine. In fact, last year I was honoured to receive the Lecturer of the Year Award, and it was a real highlight to see how much students appreciated my efforts.’

What do you enjoy doing outside of your work?

Mark: ‘Since moving to the Netherlands, I’ve fallen in love with exploring this country. I live in Rotterdam and often take the opportunity to visit cities like The Hague, Amsterdam, and others. I’m a bit of a history and culture enthusiast, so I spend a lot of time in museums. It feels like I’m on a permanent vacation here. I just can’t get enough of the rich culture and history this country offers.’

What advice would you give to students who want to make it in the media industry?

Mark: ‘Take full advantage of the resources and lecturers you have here at BUas. The Creative Business department is designed to give you a great balance of theory and practical knowledge. Be prepared and embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. Honestly, I wish I had a place like this to study when I was starting out. If you take your time here seriously, you’ll leave well-equipped for the industry.’

Mark’s journey and experiences have undoubtedly shaped him into the passionate educator he is today. His dedication to helping students discover their potential continues to make an impact here at BUas, and we are lucky to have him as part of our team.
